IBTC Lowestoft Announces New Bursary Scheme

For many looking to get into the boat building industry, the initial financial investment for training and qualifications may be too much to consider. However, the International Boatbuilding Training College in Lowestoft is offering an exciting new bursary opportunity with new funding assistance available for those wishing to undertake their 47-week City & Guilds Level 3 course in boat building.

Thanks to a private bursary grant scheme IBTC Lowestoft has a minimum of 10 bursaries available, each covering up to 50 per cent of the total course fee. The scheme is available for applicants who can commence training from either the 23rd September 2019 or 6th January 2020. Closing dates for applications are 23rd August 2019 for the September start and 30th November 2019 for January.

Previous IBTC graduates can now be found in boat yards across the world. Ben Williams and Jesse Gillespie are typical examples of what a graduate can expect for life after college:

BEN

“Since the fantastic year I spent at IBTC I have moved across the globe to New Zealand. I found work with a great company MCN Shipwrights in the north island run by Marco Scudari. Marco has some fantastic projects on the go and produces really high-quality work. It has been great to get to work with a different set of timbers and designs and has been an amazing opportunity and I hope to one day return. My next adventure will take me to a project in Scotland where I will be working to use boatbuilding to help at risk young people in the community.”

JESSE

“I graduated from the IBTC Lowestoft in June 2018. Directly after finishing the course I took a job at Spirit Yachts in Ipswich. Being a wooden boatbuilder takes a lifetime of skill and experience and I still have a lot to learn, but my year at the IBTC has given me enough all-round training that I was able to start my first boatbuilding job with confidence. I am delighted to be working at Spirit Yachts; the quality and beauty of the boats is second to none and it is inspiring to be working with a highly skilled team of craftspeople on such beautiful creations!”
